Birthday in Belize

Today was an amazing day at school. The morning was spent primarily running through the motions of a regular day, but in the afternoon my students surprised me with a party for my birthday. I was moved to tears as I walked into afternoon prayer and it quickly transitioned into the happy birthday song and my students had written notes on the white board, supplied chips with dip, cupcakes and gifts for me. Through out the week I had actually mentioned to my roommates that I felt my cooperating teacher was acting weird and I was nervous I had done something wrong, but now I know he was just trying to pull off this surprise party with the students. My heart has never felt so full before. I am definitely nervous for the water works when I leave. The students at San Pedro Roman Catholic have definitely stolen a piece of my heart!

Vivaldi’s Science Lab

This week all of first grade had their academic showcase! This is an event that the students have been preparing for all month.  They showcase science experiments and their parents come to see their presentation and hard work.  All the kids were excited to see their parents and present what they have been working so hard on! There were two different sessions and my class did amazing in both! First they did a presentation as a class about the scientific method, then the parents split into groups to watch the different experiments each group was responsible for.  After the parents watched the students do the experiment, they had to do the experiment themselves. Next, they went outside to the our interactive bulletin boards.  There is an app called Aurasma that is similar to QR codes.  The app allows you to scan a bright picture that then plays a video or displays a picture.  We had baby pictures of each student as mad scientists that triggered a video of that particular student when scanned.  In the image below you can see the pictures of all our teachers in our class!  This app works great for an interactive bulletin board but could also be used in everyday classrooms.  For example, you could pre-record directions for a center and have the students scan an image to hear the directions.  Overall, the academic showcase was a success and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to participate in it!

All Around Hong Kong

We go all around Hong Kong doing fun things! One of the places we enjoyed a great deal was Ocean Park.  Our local buddies recommended we go there instead of Hong Kong Disney, so we went with our buddy Natalie and another international student called Anouk.  There were so many fun rides and cool animals to see at Ocean Park, so we recommend making that a day trip while you are here.

Another stop that you should be sure to hit is the Victoria Harbor area.  It is really nice for food, little shops and a pretty view.  We are planning on heading back over there soon when the weather is nicer!

When you want to get some shopping done, especially finding cheap designer bags, you need to go to the Ladies market.  When you go there be ready to bargain because everyone is willing to go down on price.  I ended up getting three designer bags and a tea set for under $100 USD.  It is a lot of fun being in that crazy environment with so many people!

One last place to mention that is near and dear to us is the Tai Po area in general.  This is the location that is closest to us at the University and where we go when we need to take the metro to anywhere else.  Here you can shop, go to the supermarket, grab some cheap food, and see a whole lot of friendly local people.  We go here a lot when we want to grab dinner or need to pick up any essentials because it is so close and so uniquely local.

Things We Wish We Knew:

  • To get places from the university you have four options: The 74K bus, the 26 minibus, the University bus, and a green taxi.  They all go to different spots and have their benefits for different reasons.  Make sure you know where each one goes.
  • Learn your basic words in Cantonese like please and good morning.  Using a little local language goes a long way.
  • Tai Po Bus Terminal is in Tai Po Central and that is a different location from Tai Po Market Station where the MTR is.
  • Always have a good amount of money on your octopus card because if you want to, you can use it to pay at certain locations including the canteen dining hall on campus.
  • Go places when the weather is nice! It is not always clear and sunny, so when it is take advantage.
  • Turn your AC unit off at night if you do not want to wake up with a stuffy nose.
  • Leave a fan on or the AC on in your room if you go on a long trip.

Excellent visit to Michayla and Ashley in Rio

I visited Michayla and Ashley these past few days. On Sunday night, we all met for dinner at Garota de Ipanema. Garota de Ipanema (Girl From Ipanema) is the spot where the legendary bossa nova song of the same name was penned. The songwriters Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes were inspired by a beautiful girl who passed by the window of the bar as they… We had a great dinner with excellent conversation.

On Monday, I observe Ashley read Dr. Suess’ “One fish, two fish” to her kindergartners. Excellent reading and relating the story to her students. On Tuesday I observed Michayla teach a lesson on “shortest”. Michayla used a very fun video to engage her students and teach her lesson.

I truly enjoyed my dinner with Michayla and Ashley. Given their thoughtfulness and enthusiasm in embracing their time in Rio, I believe they have had a life changing experience. Well done ladies.

Papallacta and El Teleferico

This past weekend we planned to go to Papallacta which we were told was only about an hour away and had natural hot springs. So we decided to just go for the day on Saturday. Long story short we ended up traveling for MUCH longer than intended (about 5 hours) and didn’t arrive until around 3:30. We grabbed some lunch and then tried the public pools which ended up only being $4 because we got there so late! It ended up being a pretty good day despite the frustrating travel and the hour we spent at the pools (basically giant hot tubs with natural hot water 😯) was just the right amount of time.

(Above is a picture of us with the view of Quito behind us: gorgeous and perfect weather!)

Sunday was pretty calm; we just went to this place called El Teleferico which kind of like a chair lift or gondola that took you up to a spot where you could see the whole city of Quito. It was so beautiful and we were really glad we took the opportunity to do it. After we stopped at a place to eat that we’ve been wanting to try that is basically and outdoor food court and it was surprisingly inexpensive and super delicious. We all got burgers (we have yet to have a bad burger here…) and then headed home before the rain hit us. Overall it was a really great weekend and it’s crazy to think we have only two left!

Professor MacMillan’s Visit to Rio

Hello to all!

This week is our 7th week here at EARJ and it is hard to believe that next week will be our last week in Rio. On Sunday, Michayla and I had dinner with Professor MacMillan at a restaurant in Ipanema called Garota de Ipanema, and we enjoyed talking about our experience here and the benefit of traveling and studying abroad. On Monday, Professor MacMillan was able to see me teach my Kindergartners a reading lesson. They enjoyed meeting our visitor, “Mr. Bob!” To Professor MacMillan, we wish you safe travels home and to all the other student teachers, live it up for your remaining time abroad!

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. ~Dr. Seuss

This Friday we had character dress up day at school. The librarians here organize a lot of fun activities to celebrate and encourage literacy. Leading up to character dress up day, the students in the lower school were encouraged to read as many books as they could. With each book they will fill out a leaf to describe why they would recommend that book to a friend. Next week they will pull out leaves from a hat from each grade and those students will have a literacy party in the library with a lot of food. In the library they will then hang up all the leaves to celebrate all the amazing books that the students have read. Emily and I both dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters. I chose to be the Cat in the Hat and she was the Lorax because it is her favorite book. Every single student in my class dressed up as their favorite book character. It was so encouraging to see such participation in the event and it was awesome to see how creative some students were with their costumes!

Easter Holiday

We had just over a week and a half off for Easter break.  We took that free time to do some traveling.  We went to Singapore; Phuket, Thailand; and Ho Chi Min, Vietnam. We highly recommend future students use their time to travel as well; it’s been a whirlwind but an awesome experience!

Singapore

I think Singapore may have been my favorite stop on this trip (but also the most expensive). We did Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa (beach area), the Night Safari, and ate in the Arab District and Little India. Most people spoke English and I was blown away with the variety of culture there.  It is the most international place I’ve ever been. Singapore’s culture isn’t truly it’s own yet, the culture is about all the different cultures within it.

Thailand

We went to Phuket, Thailand.  We serendipitously went during Thai New Year, Songkran. Everyone gathers in the street and will soak you with water — careful with your electronics (they don’t care about getting them wet!). It was so much fun!  They will also put this white paste on your face, it’s part of the celebration too.

On another day we went to Tiger Kingdom to pet tigers and did elephant tours.  It’s amazing to see their wildlife.

And lastly, we did a James Bond Island tour.  I highly suggest doing a tour of the islands.  That’s when you’ll see Thailand’s true beauty!

Thailand seemed safe enough (the area that we were in) however every Singapore taxi driver we spoke to told us to be careful in Thailand and Vietnam.  They told us not to go out at night alone (we were three girls). We took their advice and are, obviously, fine! 🙂

Vietnam

We went to Ho Chi Min for the food!  So goooodddd!

We saw the War Museum. Although we felt awkward at times due to the anti-US propaganda, we never felt unwelcome.  It was only about $1 USD to get in, and even though there was not much to see, it was still worth the trip.

There are a bunch of beautiful 3D cards that you can buy on the street for $1-$3 USD. There are also a bunch of cheap, nice-looking fake bags if that’s you kind of thing! (There are fake bags everywhere in Asia, but Vietnam was the cheapest we’ve seen.)

The best thing we did was go to the AO Show at the Opera House.  It was about $30 USD but it was amazing.  The show was full of perfectly timed stunts and the acrobatics were incredible.

Just a word of warning, Vietnam was the most unsafe place we went.  Although we felt fine during the day, we didn’t venture out at night — at all.  A Vietnamese taxi driver did rip us off. He used his meter (but punched in a bunch of stuff before we started), and we paid almost $20 USD rather than the typical $5 USD. I’d just say be cautious and don’t go out alone and you’ll be ok.

The whole reason we went to Vietnam was to do a cooking class.  However, two of us got really sick and we weren’t able to make it.  (Well actually, in the chaos of being sick we just forgot about it.) If we go back, we’d definitely do one!

Helpful things to know:

  • Most budget airlines will charge you for bags over 7kg.  (Only one carry on… no personal items…) So leave room for souvenirs!
  • Bring a small luggage scale with you from the US.  It will save you a lot of headaches and $15-$100 in baggage fees each flight.
  • The airlines here take FOREVER to check you in (not so much Hong Kong). Make sure you arrive to the airport 3 hours early for international flights.
  • We did an online visa application form for Vietnam.  It’s not worth it, we still had to wait in line with everyone else and fill out the same forms.  Save the $20 and just complete the forms when you arrive (since you have to anyway).
  • In Thailand and Vietnam you can bargain for everything — taxi ride prices, prices of items in stores etc.
  • If you get a package sent to school and aren’t at the apartment at the time of drop off, they will hold it at the Tai Po post office (and not on campus).
  • When you pay for housing, keep your receipt from the bank!  You need to bring it to the JCPS hall management office.  (Once you give the the receipt to them, I’d still ask them to make a copy for you to keep — just in case!)  We weren’t told to bring our receipt anywhere and had to scramble to find 5 weeks later, it to prove our payment.

Buzios

Hello from Rio!

Time is flying by here in Brazil. I cannot believe we are coming home in just a little over two weeks. This past weekend we had a long weekend because of the Easter holiday. Michayla and I went on a weekend trip to Buzios, Brazil. Buzios is a beach area that is around 3 hours from Rio de Janeiro. The area has beautiful beaches and ocean views along with tons of cool restaurants, bars, and shops. It was nice to see a vacation destination outside of the city and a more natural part of Brazil while we were here. I have attached a few pictures from our weekend in this post!

Professor MacMillan is coming to Rio this Sunday and to EARJ on Monday so we are awaiting his arrival and a chance to show him our EARJ classes.

We have planned our last couple of weeks here and are already getting sad about leaving. I’m sure all of the student teachers abroad are feeling the same way. I hope everyone is enjoying their experience and continue to have a great last few weeks in whichever country you are teaching in!

Semana Santa

This past week was our vacation and it was absolutely amazing! We traveled twelve hours by bus to get to the coast of Ecuador, but it was so worth it. While there we visited three beach towns (Puerto Lopez, Ayampe, and Monanita), ate some of the most amazing seafood, and were really able to relax and regroup after being in Ecuador for a month. What was really incredible, though, was that each beach town offered us something unique to do. In Puerto Lopez we were able to go to Los Frailes and the Poor Man’s Galapagos on Isla de Plata where we saw some of the most beautiful views, snorkeled, and were able to take pictures with a blue footed booby! Ayampe gave us one of the best hostel experiences any of us had every had with beachfront access, a relaxing atmosphere, and the chance to meet people from all over the world. Montanita, although not quite as relaxing as the others, was fun and exciting with lots of activities to do and people to meet. All three of us were to sad to leave but it was an incredible experience we will never forget.
